Slay the Spire 2 is Developed on Godot Engine
Apr-13-2024
Mega Crit excited its fan base with the unexpected unveiling of Slay the Spire 2, the successor to its acclaimed rogue-like deck-building game. Scheduled for a launch next year via Steam Early Access, the game is set to introduce both new and familiar classes, adversaries, and bosses. Notably, the sequel will be powered by the Godot engine, as confirmed in a conversation with IGN, marking a significant shift from Unity, the engine used in the original game.
The decision to adopt Godot, an open-source engine, was influenced by Mega Crit's desire for enhanced modern features, improved visuals, and broader modding capabilities. The team expressed dissatisfaction with Unity's controversial install-fee policies, which prompted them to consider switching engines unless Unity fully reversed those changes and implemented terms of service protections. Despite Unity reversing its stance and the resignation of its CEO, John Riccitiello, Mega Crit proceeded with its transition to Godot.
Slay the Spire 2 promises to leverage Godot's flexibility and capabilities to offer expanded modding options and introduce novel gameplay elements that have yet to be disclosed. Fans are encouraged to follow updates, particularly as more details about the Early Access period are set to emerge over the next year.
